Jiufen Tour FAQ
How long is a Jiufen day trip from Taipei?
Most shared days on this page run seven to ten hours from the Taipei meeting point to the return. The shortest coach-style option is a five-hour half day covering Shifen and Jiufen, and the longest single day is a twelve-hour private itinerary that adds Yangmingshan National Park. A handful of listings print no duration at all, mostly tickets, so confirm timing on the live listing before you plan the rest of your day around it.
Which kind of tour suits a first visit?
A shared north coast day is the common first choice: it stacks Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen Old Street and Shifen Old Street in one outing, with from-prices from $20.29. If you would rather skip the big coach, a Jiufen and Shifen day trip covers the two old streets without the geopark. Night tours suit anyone who wants the lanterns lit and the streets after dark. Tickets suit a self-guided day.
Tour or public transport, which is better?
There is no direct train from Taipei to Shifen. Taipei to Ruifang takes 32 to 68 minutes, median 46, at fares from NT$73 local to NT$114 Tze-Chiang or Puyuma. Ruifang to Shifen runs 17 trains a day, NT$29 flat, 27 minutes, the same 17 on a Saturday as a Monday, but with real gaps of 1h39m after 16:54 and 1h44m after 19:22. A tour absorbs the connections; the train rewards careful timetable work.
How much does a Jiufen tour cost?
Tickets redeemed in Jiufen run from $2.55 to $24.29. Tours you board run from $20.29 to $307, with a median from-price of $85. By category: north coast days from $20.29 to $89.75, private charters from $99 to $307, Jiufen and Shifen trips from $25.25 to $168, night tours from $39 to $105, and Keelung shore excursions from $155 to $186. One private listing is priced at $237 per group of up to four, not per person.
Does it rain too much to go?
It rains a lot, but that is a packing question, not a veto. The Keelung station recorded 3,589.7 mm a year across 1991 to 2020, 54 percent more than Taipei, falling on 193.6 days a year. July is the driest month, November the wettest, and 61 percent of the annual rain falls September to February. Bring real rain gear and keep a covered fallback, such as the Gold Museum or a teahouse, in your plan.
What changes on weekends and holidays?
New Taipei City runs traffic control from 08:00 to 20:00 every weekend and holiday, in force since 1 January 2025. Large coaches are rationed to about 20 approved per half-day slot, and applications are refused on holidays of three or more days. The Jiufen-Jinguashi road, a dangerous section, is barred to large coaches entirely. Expect heavier crowds and tighter coach access on weekends and long holidays; weekdays run lighter.
How do night tours work in practice?
Night listings run into the evening, and each states its own return time, so read that line before booking anything later the same evening. The Teahouse Stop, Sunset, Night Market listing includes Jiufen Old Street, Heping Island and Keelung Miaokou Night Market, with an optional A-Mei Teahouse tea set; A-Mei itself opens until 21:30. Two night listings are rated 5.0 but on very small review counts, 5 and 4 respectively.
Where are sky lanterns allowed?
Only on one marked stretch of Pingxi: from the Shifen Visitor Center to Shigong Bridge. Releases are banned between 22:00 and 06:00, lanterns must carry the seller's name and address, and anyone under 14 must be accompanied. Lantern releases are a Shifen activity, never a Jiufen one. Three listings on this page state a release as part of the day: the $82 shared north coast day, the $99 half-day private, and the $155 Keelung shore excursion.
Is Jiufen the town in Spirited Away?
No claim to that effect stands. Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki said on record on 19 September 2023, to Taiwanese media, that neither he nor Miyazaki has ever been to Jiufen, and that the alley which startled Miyazaki was in Seoul. Jiufen's lanterns and lanes are worth visiting on their own terms, but the Ghibli connection is a rumor the studio has denied on the record, and this page does not repeat it as fact.
Is a ticket the same as a tour?
No. A ticket is redeemed at the venue in Jiufen or Jinguashi: nothing to board, no pickup, no guide. The Gold Museum Entry E-Ticket, at $2.55, gets you into the museum, which charges NT$80 at the door and closes the first Monday of every month. A teahouse voucher such as the Historic Teahouse Prepaid Voucher at $24.29 reserves your seat and includes food or refreshments. A tour adds transport and stops.
What meals are included on tours?
Food or refreshments are stated on 5 of the 29 listings you board, among them the $82 shared day that also includes a sky lantern and the $168 eight-hour day. Three of the six tickets, the two teahouse vouchers and the tea session, also include food or refreshments. A listing that states nothing has not ruled meals out, so if lunch matters to your day, confirm what is provided on the live listing before you book.
Private car or shared coach, which should I pick?
A shared coach is cheaper, from $20.29, and runs fixed routes with printed meeting points such as Taipei Main Station East Gate 3. Private charters, from $99 to $307, collect you at your hotel or any address inside Taipei City, several with a driver-guide waiting with a sign, and all seven state free cancellation. One, the $237 listing, is priced per group of up to four, which can make it competitive for a family.
How do Keelung shore excursions handle ship times?
The three shore excursions, from $155 to $186, run eight hours each and start at the Keelung cruise port, with the East or West passenger terminal and your ship's arrival time confirmed at booking; one prints the Keelung inner harbour. They run to the ship's own timetable, not a fixed schedule, so check the listing against your all-aboard time before booking. All three state free cancellation, and their review counts run from 87 down to 5.
Is free cancellation common on these listings?
It is stated on 22 of the 35 listings, including all seven private and custom charters and all three Keelung shore excursions. On 12 listings the page states nothing either way, which is not the same as refusing cancellation, and one states stricter terms. None of the six tickets states free cancellation. Whichever card you are looking at, read the cancellation line on the live listing before relying on it.
